Duodenum The duodenum contains the same wall layers seen in the previous portions of the GI tract: mucosa, submucosa, and muscularis externa. The epithelia and lamina propria of the mucosal layer are thrown into villi. Especially notable in this image are the Brunner's glands in the submucosa. These glands are unique to the duodenum.   The duodenum is primarily a region of chemical digestion. It receives secretions from the liver and pancreas, and its mucosa contains large numbers of mucus-producing (goblet) cells and Brunner’s glands, which secrete a watery fluid that is rich in mucus and bicarbonate ions. As in the stomach (see part 2), mucus acts as a protective barrier.

The duodenum is the shortest segment of the intestine and is about 23 to 28 cm (9 to 11 inches) long. It is roughly horseshoe-shaped, with the open end up and to the left, and it lies behind the anatomic and functional grounds, the duodenum.

It is subject to various disorders, the most common of which are peptic ulcers. The duodenum is an organ located just below the stomach and its functions include the continuation of the digestion process and the regulation of gastric emptying.

The organ is a part of the small intestine, and it is found in most vertebrates, such as mammals, birds and reptiles. Most of the chemical digestion of food takes place in the duodenum.
